Dream a Little Dream

I have discovered so many great blogs and people during this 31DBBB Challenge! One site is written by Sandi of Deva Coaching. What I love about her site is that she fully lives up to her tag line: "Asking the Right Questions at the Right Time". I have found that I will read her post and go off and mull it over for a while, then come back and read it again. She makes me think and I like that very much.

She has posted a challenge on BlogFrog asking us to share our dream with her. Sandi posed these questions:

What if you gave yourself permission to really consider that dream?

What if it wasn't a pipe dream, but a dream you could begin taking action on?

What if you had the right kind of support to make this happen?

I've never really given myself permission to dream. I always felt that dreams were forever to be "what if" moments far away and unreachable. The closest I came to fulfilling a childhood dream came this past winter when I entered a contest for a chance to write/blog about the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. I shared my Olympic Dream
in a post and realized that the only way to get to the games would be through written word rather than athletic abilities. I was not chosen to go to Vancouver and ended up writing about the Olympics from my family room chair. Far away and unreachable.

This challenge has opened the door so to speak. What if I did give myself permission to dream? What would I want to do?

My daughter asked me what I was writing about as I prepared my post and I told her about this question. She immediately said "Mom, you have to write books. Funny books that tell your stories."

Could it be that others can see what path you should be on before you do? Because she hit the nail on the head.

My dream is to become a published writer and be successful enough to support my family in the process. My dream is to grow this blog, my cooking blog and all the passions in my life and create paid published pieces from them.

Boy, if this came to fruition, it really would be a dream come true.

  1. I too feel the same way. Of all the dreams my mind can imagine (and being hopelessly creative, I can imagine a lot! LOL) I also feel they will remain only dreams, as I can't see my way clear as to how to pay for them. I walk past derelict buildings, and imagine the amazing coffee house I could design, and I can see it in my minds eye with every detail. Old houses that need to be rescued and refurbished, Travels in the world I have always wanted to take, things I want to see...and all requiring money I don't have.

I recently stumbled onto a book 'Write it down, make it happen'. I'm enjoying the excercises that require you not only to dream, but the demands that you dare to write them down in black and white and take ownership of them. To dare to dream. I'm not sure if my dreams will manifest themselves from this exercise, but I have come to understand that they will have a harder time doing so if I won't even dare to admit them to myself, or can't truly focus on what I really want.

So Kelly, all I can say in closing, is to asure you that you are not alone in this quest. There are many of us out there struggling with the same demons. Chin up, keep dreaming...and what seems to be the hardest part for all of us - To BELIEVE!

  2. Kelly,
I was moved by your dream, and can feel the longing for it in your words. What if it really is possible? We are so used to dwelling on the negative "what ifs" but what if this dream, YOUR dream is possible, one step at a time?

  3. From the mouths of babes as they say. I love to write too, I might as well have been born with pen/paper. The only problem with me is to write nonfiction you have to have a platform first. This is a lot of work but I guess anything worth having you have to work harder to achieve.

Good luck and get to writing!

  4. Our children know us better than we know ourselves! I think it is beautiful that she was kind of like "duh" mom.
    Good luck- love your dream!

  5. Everyone should dream and share their dreams outloud. I don't think anyone should ever stop dreaming and the more you believe that you already achieved your dream in your mind the sooner you will achieve it! :-)

  6. Dream big girl!
And in the process, keep the Olympics in mind. They come back every 4 years or so.
Did you read Dara's book? Another inspiring Olympic story, you should read it, it says if you have the talent and want it really bad, you can make it happen: "Age is just a Number" by Dara Torres.

  7. Thank you all for your overwhelming kindness!

I am trying to allow my dreams to take hold one day, one moment at a time...

Kids do give you that wake up smack that says "I coulda had a V8!" :)

  8. I agree that those who love us often see our potential more clearly than we do. I can't wait to buy and read your first book! I know you have it in you!!

  11. It took me a few days to comment on this one. This was wonderful.
When you said do others see our dreams first? I firmly believe the answer is yes.

You need to follow your dream. You need to write and share with the world. If you even need advice or have questions, please email me - I'd be happy to help.
What have you done towards your dream today?

I have been thinking about this a lot lately myself and while I am on my way and moving in the right direction, I still have some frustrating details to work out. Here's to living our dream!! :)

  12. Nice post and very thought provoking. Funny how life sort of happens and somewhere along the way things either fit or they don't. I've never been one to sit around and wait for something to happen...I MAKE it happen. But I've also come to understand that my happiness is so much more important than a big fat bank account {although it helps at times!}. I've dedicated a large majority of my professional life to working in the non-profit field...and now I'm venturing out into launching my own baking/catering biz and selling crafts locally {maybe etsy soon!} So I say, if you can dream it...you can do it!

  14. Not if but when it comes to fruition. One of my goals was to become a published author. I did it in 2006 with my first book. I'm publishing my 3rd book in 2011. Nike's tagline says it better: Just Do It! Good luck to you :)
