Desperately Seeking Balance
To me, balance is a word that carries many definitions. I can apply it to skating, cycling, running, dealing with emotional kids, work, play, cooking, baking and the list could go on and on. When balance is missing, you know it. The "juggling" takes on a chaotic spin and it seems like you are teetering on the edge. Well, my arms are flailing back-stroke at top speed!
It's been quite a while since I have actually written a post. I know.
I have missed typing on my laptop with my cup of coffee close by. And based on your emails, you have missed reading what I type on my laptop. Thank you for being patient with me and this blog as we try to find our way through what seems to be a mad, mad case of what most call "Hectic Life".
I am not going to list all the things that are making my life absolutely crazy right now because we all have our version of hectic, but I am going to throw a question out there in the hope that some wisdom can be shared.
How do folks find the time to blog while working?
I have a gazillion articles in my head and have some of them started, with full intention of posting throughout the week, but you and I both know how far that has gotten us in the last month!
My quest for this week is to find "blogging balance".

I've been struggling with this as well. I find myself spent during the week and hoping to carve out time to write on the weekends... but that doesn't always work out. I understand why so many writers say they get up before dawn to write. That may be the only time you can find the words... especially when you have to go to another job, which I have to do right now. Thanks for the great post Kelly!
ReplyDeleteyou just relax and do it when you can...
ReplyDeletethis question kills me... breaks my heart...
ReplyDeletefor a long time I kept a "blog incubator", a clipboard with written notes for posts on it. It used to only have 20 or so concepts/ideas on it.
It's now into the hundreds.. and I have not even added to it in the past 6 months.
Kelly I feel your pain, and there is no answer. Maybe if we were tougher, gave up sleep & woke at 5am to write..
my blog has over 700 posts in 5 years I have been at it, but only 3 in the past 2 months.
So my advice, make peace with it.... My truth? I haven't either.
If we weren't driven, we would not be writers/speedskaters/some alchemy of both.
Blogging, as with life, has an ebb and flow...just think of this as an ebb tide. I started Ice & Times as merely a more efficient way of posting short track news as opposed to the outrageously time consuming website. I confess, I get burned out on even that. In the meantime, I've been slowly setting up a personal/professional blog that I still haven't launched.
ReplyDelete...all good things in time...
It's a catch 22 situation, if life did not keep you so busy you would have nothing to write about.
ReplyDeleteTry to set aside two hours one evening a week and focus only on writing a post. For the time being you must not try and keep up the social aspect of blogging, commenting on others blogs, becoming a Follower, etc., your readers will understand.
Are you still wearing your bicycle helmet while seated in your office chair?
Sage advice from all. I will hopefully find that balance I am looking for!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I post during lunch. Keep it to 300 words and use images.
ReplyDeleteI only post 2 to 3 times a week. More if I can get to it but I have promised to only do it when I am inspired.
I also promised to practice getting inspired, lol. So far it has worked.
Hi! Visiting from SITS for the Saturday Sharefest. It's funny you were writing about this and that's what this week's SITS post is about! I agree with David that you can garner ideas for posts while you're busy with life right now. Do lots of drafts and finish one whenever you have a spare hour or so. Sometimes if I find myself with extra time, I'll do a couple ahead. That doesn't happen too often these days, but I keep plugging. :) Good luck!

ReplyDeleteI have been struggling trying to find children time, blog walking time and posting time. I started the 31DBB challenge and had to give it up because it was time and brain consuming. I cut down my blog walk- commenting which I love is taxing.
When I worked on top of this
I blogged at night
and
just as
Heidi said I also cut down how often I blogged to 2-3 times even once a week.
It's definitely a challenge. I'm catching up today because I am home from work with a cold! When I feel overwhelmed I have to remind myself that I started blogging for enjoyment, as a way to express myself and connect with others, it was never intended to be a burden. I often only post once a week and that works for me. This gives me time to read other blogs and also do some behind the scenes work on my blog. I'm definitely more about quality than quantity.
