November Series: Thankful Thursday

For the month of November, Mom Got Blog will be sharing a series of guest posts with you every Thursday called "Thankful Thursday"!

Today we welcome Jane of Australia from Life @ Number 8( http://www.janezworld.com/blog.) where she 'blogs holistically'. Her glass is always considered half-full, which shines through in her writing.

Last Tuesday I went on a movie binge with my dear friend Lee. We had decided upon just 2 movies this time. Over the years, I occasionally joined both Lee, and her late husband for triple-movie binges. We’d escape from a hot summer’s day into the world of cinema.

This half- price Tuesday saw us arrive with sandwiches, water bottles and nibbles.

Later, after the 1st movie ended, during the 20minute break we went for a walk.
I continued on a little further alone and purchased a crunchy crisp royal-gala apple. I bought my friend a white chocolate cup cake.

The films, while pleasant, charming and delightful were a little slow.

Mid afternoon we came out into beautiful Brisbane sunshine. As we walked towards our cars, we made arrangements for this to be a monthly event. I made a comment about how Lee’s husband would have loved the day.

A quick hug and I set out across the road, as I did I felt a sudden lightness of heart.
I opened my car door and slid in.
A wave of happiness washed over me. ‘I love life’ I thought.

Yes. I do.

I’m alive, feeling good, grown up, able to drive, with my own car, and just had a fun day with a dear friend.
As I drove home, I took a different route, because I wanted to. I drove over the newish
GoBetween Bridge, for the first time ever.

GoBetween Bridge

The toll tag beeped.

I laughed as I had forgotten it was there on the windscreen

I thought how often are we happy, and fail to see it?

I’m thankful for the feeling and for recognizing it.

Gilligan's Island The Chicago Series: "Mary Ann"

Mary Ann via Google Image Search
There is always that one girl that makes the boys swoon. The girl next door, sweet, pretty and wholesome. The girl you want to bring home to meet mom. The girl we noticed sitting at the bar could be that girl.

It was our last night in Chicago and after leaving the Hancock Building, we decided to have a night-cap at our hotel establishment. We grabbed a high top table and ordered and chatted about our evening. It wasn't too crowded, but it was starting to pick up.

A group of girls stopped just outside the front door. They were there for a long enough time that it grabbed my friend's attention and she asked me what they were doing. I watched them do a "Mr.Rogers"...they leaned on one another as they took out there stilettos and placed them on their feet as they tucked flip-flops into their handbags. The door swung open and they waltzed in about 10 feet or so and grabbed a stool at the bar.We joked that now we understood how the young girls were able to walk around this city with such high heels. The secret: have flip-flops at the ready!  The other secret-sit immediately.

As they got comfortable, my friend and I noticed this young woman, hair pulled neatly back into a ponytail, very nicely dressed, in casual preppy clothes. She was chatting with a young man and they looked as if they were enjoying a first date. My girlfriend and I ooh-ed and ahh-ed over her very cute bag and the guys mentioned how she looked like Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. We chuckled and noticed that the two lovebirds got very close and made their way out the door. Aww. How sweet.

We lost interest with the bar area and got lost in our own conversation. This was the first trip the four of us had taken with each other and it was really fun. There are some friends that you can hang with and then there are friends you can travel with. We learned on this trip that our friends possess both qualities!

We started to notice that the bar was starting to get busy and crowded. At the table next to us, we heard a young man talking on his cell. He was trying to figure out where his lady friend was. He was explaining into the phone the bar he was sitting in...that he had been there for a while and would continue to wait til she arrived. The girl on the other end was being witty because he was laughing nervously...almost the panic nervous- don't stand me up- laugh. The phone rang again and he started describing the bar again...a little more nervous laughter and then a "Ha! No way....haha" He was looking toward the bar area.

And who was sitting at the bar on the other end of the phone?! "Mary Ann"! The nice girl we saw leave the bar about an hour ago with a DIFFERENT guy than the one next to us. MMmm....hmmmm. Our young Romeo walked over to her at the bar and they giggled as they closed their phones in unison.

We all gave each other that "what the....." look. That's when the fellas chimed in with "You know, all the boys liked Mary Ann way more than Ginger!"

Uh, huh.

Don't let the girl-next-door looks fool you! I don't think the boys are planning to bring her home to meet mom....

At least not tonight!

"Trick or Tweet!" Happy Halloween!

Every Halloween I like to come up with a unique costume to celebrate the holiday and hand out treats to all the Trick or Treaters. It's fun to banter back and forth with the TOT's, "Hey great costume", "Hey, great costume yourself!"

While digging through the Halloween box, I found a blue wig....the color of the blue was familiar....and it got the imagination going.....and I came up with.....

TWITTER!!
I was all shades of blue...From head to toe....

And to think that a little over a year ago, I didn't even have a Twitter! Now I can't stay away from it!

Dressing up is fun...but the real fun begins when the bell rings and you get to see what characters are looking for chocolaty treats. I think my favorite of the night was a little girl decked out with a shiny pink cowgirl hat, and a matching pink tulle skirt, complete with cowgirl boots. I answered the door to a sweet little...

Cowgirl: "Trick or Treat! What are you this Halloween?"
Me: "I'm Twitter"
Cowgirl: "That's cool. I'm a cowgirl."
Me: "I like your pink hat!"
Cowgirl: "Yes, it helps me do this"
she grabbed her hat by the brim and kicking up her booted heel yelled
"Yeeeee-Haaaawww!"

She was the cutest thing ever, and I wanted to give her the whole big bowl of candy.

The next surprise- my daughter baked a birthday cake that matched my costume!!

This Halloween really was a Treat with a Tweet! :)

This is Day 3 of the SITS Halloween Party...check out the other folks that are in today's Halloween Parade!

MGB-Blogger of the Month:November!

Today's Gilligan Island: Chicago Series post will run on Tuesday due to today being November 1and the announcement of our new Blogger of the Month!

MGB Blogger of the Month is Lisa, author of generating HEAT, (a journey back to myself). I met Lisa through the wonderful sport of speedskating. We became fast friends (no pun intended!) and we haven't looked back. If I had to pick one person that squeezes every bit out of a day, life for that matter, Lisa would be my choice, hands down. Not only does she throw herself into everything, her family, her work, her art, her skating, her coaching, one thing is very clear: she is giving. She gives her time, knowledge, patience, encouraging word, and most importantly herself, without asking anything in return other than you to listen and be present in the moment with her.  With every conversation we have, I always learn something new about her that I didn't know before. A couple of years ago, I learned that Lisa kept a blog so I started to read. Her written word pulls you in to an adventure every time! Simply wonderful, as is my friend Lisa. Grab a cup of coffee and join me in welcoming Lisa as our new Blogger of the Month!

generating HEAT (a journey back to myself)
MGB- Why did you decide to start a blog?

GH- I started blogging about 3 years ago. I had taken a class on how to use WIKIs, blogs, news feeds, podcasts and other technology in the classroom over the summer at St. Thomas University in St. Paul. I was actually working on the course content for that class while attending another class in Philadelphia at UArts. I was also trying to train for my first marathon. I was living the life of a business traveler that week. I would go to the studio in the morning and go back to the hotel and write for the other class. I would squeeze runs in during the morning and evening. Part of my classwork included writing a blog and getting 3 responses.  After that week in Philly, we headed to the beach in Delaware, where I broke my foot running on the sand. I never ran the marathon and really gained weight. I started the blog shortly after that. It was supposed to be a motivation to loose weight. It didn't work, but it evolved into this thing that satisfied the need to write. I have always written about my adventures, just never had the ease of one click and it was published, that thrilled me.

MGB- You are a wife, mom of 4, teacher, artist, athlete- how do you find the time to fit it all in?

GH- How do I manage it all? I take a deep breath and exhale slowly, like I am trying to swim the length of a pool on one breath. By the way, I feel that I cannot be one without each of the other components.

I used to be really uptight and I think depressed. I became a mother way before I was ready to give up my studio time, vacations, dreams... I got so caught up in the small stuff that I was completely over-stressed, ready to crack, not myself. One day when I was having a near meltdown over something easy to fix, my husband's grandmother told me to pay attention to what I was reacting to. Since that conversation I have re framed my dreams and have tried not to sweat the little things. I choose my battles wisely so that when big important things come along I can say NO. It's a balancing act, but by practicing it over the years it has allowed me to relax when I have time for myself. It helps that I have a husband who is so supportive of me as a person as well.
Being an artist and educator I am in love, no, make that passionate, about learning. I prove this to myself everyday. I can often be found in the studio at school after the end of classes each day, one hour to help my students and one hour to work alongside them. I learn more from my students (and kids) than I could ever do on my own. I almost think its kind of selfish quest on my own part. It encompasses every part of my being. I observe, perceive, create, reflect on a continuum. I cannot seem to separate myself from it.
As for an being an athlete and coach, well, if you look at my attitudes toward learning you would understand why I have this passion as well. I guess I am in love with challenges; of the heart, the mind, the body and the soul.

So, to answer your question; I compartmentalize when I need to, I find time to relax often, I budget time, I multi-task, I am very persistent (sometimes to the point of being a bulldog), I walk a tight-rope without being afraid of falling (failure only makes for smoother facets on that diamond we call life). I am continually learning to put life in perspective and to continue to let things roll. I also try to enjoy it.

MGB- What is one of your personal favorite posts? Why is it your favorite?

GH-Oh that is a hard one. I think it was this incredibly short one called Dancing in the Dark. I wrote it last year when I had taken this incredible leap of faith and biked to school in the dark of morning. I saw the sun come up on my way. I can still see that morning and I can still feel the rush of confidence I gained from it. You can find it here: http://hopeloveandspeedskates.blogspot.com/2009/09/dancing-in-dark.html

MGB-This was one of my favorite's too!

MGB- What would you like to see for your blog a year from now?

GH- Hopefully with a boatload of antics and a ton of insight into this "Big Old Goofy World" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZACwVOJXpn0

Please be sure to check out Lisa's blog throughout the month of November! Leave comments, let her know that you visited!
