Last Friday, my son came home from school and dove head first into the kitchen cabinet looking for something to eat. No hello, no Hi Mom. Nothing. As he dug through the cupboard, he exclaimed:
"We have NOTHING to eat in this house!"
I never really thought that the phrase "They are eating me out of house and home!" had much merit to it...that is until the sweet little boy who lives under our roof started to go through the teenage growth spurt. My husband and I both seem to have that look of shock every single morning as "The Boy" meanders down the stairs. He seems to grow by leaps and bounds with every night's rest. He is head and shoulders above his OLDER sister now, which drives her absolutely mad...but that is a story for another day.
As we settled on making some microwave popcorn, he said to me, "Mom, you have to give me more in my lunch. Today was pizza day, which meant no spare food to give away to me!"
What the heck does that mean? I can barely close his lunch bag as it is with all the stuff in there and he's looking for more?
Apparently, the guys at lunch check out who has what and will do a lunch-swap, trade, barter, etc. I guess on pizza days, all bets are off and you have to fend for yourself. Dine on the feast that is packed for you because there are no extras to be had.
The way our grocery budget keeps growing and growing, I think I may be feeding the next replacement giant at the top of Jack's Beanstalk. Only this giant won't fall to his doom, he is just looking for some spare food or pizza to get him through to the next meal.
